Can Freelance Platforms Kickstart Your Design Career?
Episode Summary
In this solo episode of Brand Your Brain I’m talking all about freelance platforms. Are they good, are they bad? How can a freelance platform differ from going straight into marketing your business on social media? Let’s talk about it
The Confession:
I was bullied into oblivion by other creatives (not actually bullied but it kinda felt like it) when I just started out as an artist and designer and I worked on Fiverr. Yes, I was charging peanuts but I also am completely self-taught, I couldn’t afford to go to uni again and get more into debt just cause I now figured out what I actually wanna study (design) and I had zero clue of how to work with clients…
…I think it’s good to talk about a way to leverage them at the start of your journey as a designer, instead of listening to big dog designers essentially say – omg that’s so bad and horrible you should be embarrassed – I think there’s a way, if you have 0 experience and 0 clue and 0 money to use them the right way with some guidance with people who have done it instead of just being shamed.”
Main Discussion:
- Feeling ashamed of using freelance platforms
- Why freelance platforms may be unethical
- Why previous undercharging or free work isn’t shameful
- Not letting others make you feel bad for your past
- Setting boundaries in your business
